Women's Electronic Network Training (WENT) Africa

These are training workshops aimed at helping African women's organisations to access and utilise ICTs for developing their social work. It will also help create a platform on which African women together with their oganisations can discuss issues of concern and develop strategies towards reaching their goals. The following is a list of workshops held:

WENT Africa 2005

WENT Africa 2003
The WENT Africa 2003 is a workshop which was held from March 29 to April 04 2003 in Cape Town, South Africa. The workshop promotes the use of information and communications technology to help strengthen women's organisations in Africa. The workshop was lead by an all-women training team with an extensive experience in Information and Communications Technology (ICTs) for women empowerment. Women took part in the training to expand their technological expertise.

GASAT International Conferences on Gender And Science And Technology

The Gender And Science And Technology (GASAT) Association is an international association that is deals with issues concerning gender and science and technology. This association has hosted a number of conferences, known as the GASAT International Conferences, since 1981. Although the conferences have been held mostly outside Africa, Africans have participated in them. The following is a list of GASAT conferences:

12th GASAT Conference (GASAT12)
The GASAT 12 International Conference will be held in 2006 in the UK. The conference planning group has chosen to explore the interaction between GASAT and the UN agreed Millenium Development Goals(MDG). In 2000, 191 United Nations member states pledged to meet eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG) by 2015 which are:
• Eradicate extreme hunger and poverty;
• Achieve universal primary education;
• Promote gender equality and empowerment of women;
• Reduce child mortality;
• Improve maternal health;
• Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases;
• Ensure environmental sustainability;
• Develop a global partnership for development

11th GASAT Conference (GASAT11)
The conference will be held from 6th to 11th July 2003 in Mauritius. Conference sub-themes are:
• new initiatives in science, technology, mathematics education at the formal level;
• meeting the new challenges of the new technologies;
• women, science, technology and the workforce; and
• gender, the environment and sustainable development.

10th GASAT Conference (GASAT10)
GASAT10 was held between 1st and 6th July 2001, in Copenhagen, Denmark. The sub-themes of the conference were:
• changing primary and secondary school education;
• transforming higher education within science and technology;
• creating a gender-inclusive labour market within science and technology;
• merging formal and indigenous and informal science and technology; and
• visions for science and technology in the new millennium.

9th GASAT Conference (GASAT9)
GASAT9 was held between 4th and 9th July 1999, in Accra, Ghana. Conference sub-themes were:
• education and training;
• gender issues in employment/work;
• environment, natural resources and waste management;
• gender issues in information and new technologies;
• valuing women's knowledge and skills; and
• mainstreaming gender into science and technology.

8th GASAT Conference (GASAT 8)
GASAT8 was held in Ahmedabad, India, on January 5-10, 1996. The theme of the conference was: Towards Sustainable Development - Achieving Four E's: Education, Employment, Equality, Empowerment

Earlier GASAT conferences
There is little information on the GASAT conferences that were held prior to GASAT 8. The earlier GASAT conferences took place as follows:
• GASAT 7 took place in Ontario, Canada in 1993
• GASAT 6 took place in Melbourne, Australia in 1991
• GASAT 5 took place in Haifa, Israel in 1989
• GASAT 4 took place in Ann Arbour, USA in 1987
• GASAT 3 took place in London, UK in 1985
• GASAT 2 took place in Oslo, Norway in 1983
• GASAT 1 took place in Eindhoven, The Netherlands in 1981.

Horn of Africa Regional Conference on Women and
Information and Communications Technology

The conference was organised by the African Centre for Women, Information and Communications Technology (ACWICT). It was held in Nairobi, Kenya from 3rd June to 7th June 2002. The theme of the conference was: "Women and ICTs: Towards a Horn of Africa Regional Women's Knowledge Network", the conference aimed at raising awareness on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) amongst women in the Horn of Africa Region and exploring opportunities for harnessing the technology to work as a tool for their advancement.

Second South African Women in Engineering Conference

The Second South African Women in Engineering Conference was held in Gauteng, South Africa on 27 September 2000. The themes of the conference were:
• attraction of more women into engineering;
• raising the profile of women in engineering;
• training projects for women in engineering;
• building support for women in engineering and research projects.

First Women in Engineering Conference

This conference was organised by the Centre for Research in Engineering Education (CREE), in collaboration with South African Women in Science and Engineering (SAWISE) and the South African Association for Consulting Engineers. It was held in 1999, at the University of Cape Town, in Cape Town, South Africa. The main aim of the conference was to promote the participation of women in the male dominated sector - Engineering.

African Women in Science and Engineering Conference (AWSE)

The AWSE conference took place between the 29th of November and the 3rd of December 1999 in Nairobi, Kenya. It was hosted by the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF) together with the International Foundation for Science (IFS). The objectives of the AWSE conference, as stated in their web site, were:
• to identify and analyse the reasons why so few women study Basic and Applied sciences in Africa;
• to discuss strategies, policies and actions that would persuade more women to pursue Science degrees and careers;
• to highlight research and educational projects and accomplishments by women scientists; and
• to Promote dialogue among African female scientists, and between policy makers, donors and international organisations.

TWOWS Second General Assembly and International Conference

The Third World Organization of Women in Science (TWOWS) hosted the TWOWS Second General Assembly and International Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, between 8 and 11 February 1999. This conference, held under the statement: Women, Science and Technology for Sustainable Development, was an Associated Meeting for the World Conference on Science.

First International Conference on Women in Technology & Development

This conference was held in Columbus, Ohio, from 9th to 11th April 1998. The African Women Global Network (AWOGNet) was one of the sponsors of this conference. Conference goals were:
• to build and promote a network of knowledge sources in technology, especially as they affect women and development;
• to exchange information and promote understanding of on-going endeavors;
• to explore and remove barriers to meeting technology needs (in theory and practice) for women in different communities; and
• to educate institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and others regarding these issues.
