loveLife Cyber-Health-Ys

loveLife is the South African national HIV prevention programme for youth. Cyber-Health-Ys are implemented in 17 of the loveLife Youth centres (Y-centres) countrywide. One of the goals of the programme is to increase self-confidence and HIV awareness in young people through basic computer skills training, including Linux, Windows and internet usage and application such as Open Office and MS Office.

Each Cyber-Health-Y lab is networked with 7-10 PCs and has a Cyber-Nerd who is supported by 5 Mpintshis (volunteers). The Cyber-Nerds train young people at the Y-centres and maintain the labs. The Mpintshis implement the programme in schools with computers around the Y-centres. In total there are about 85 implementers of whom 51 are women.

APC-Africa-Women

The objective of APC-Africa-Women is to empower African women's organisations to use the Internet and other ICTs to achieve their goals.

African Gender Institute

The African Gender Institute promotes the learning and teaching of gender studies and one of its aims is to strengthen the intellectual and leadership capacity of those working towards the attainment of gender equity in Africa.

GWS AFRICA: Gender and Women's Studies for Africa's Transformation

GWS Africa is a project of the African Gender Institute, sponsored by the Ford Foundation. The aim of GWS Africa is to strengthen African teaching and research in gender and women's studies by bringing African teachers and researchers together.

AFRICA: South of the Sahara

Africa: South of the Sahara is a library resource of Stanford Unversity. This web site provides a list of internet resources and contains information about Africa, such as the internet and computing in Africa, etc.

African Information Society Initiative

The African Information Society Initiative is an African program that uses information and communications technologies (ICTs) to help speed up the economic and social development in Africa.

African ICT Achievers Awards

The African ICT Achievers Awards honours Black ICT professionals with the aim of encouraging entrepeneurship and identifying role models. The awards include an award for the top Black woman in the ICT industry.

National Information Technology Forum

The National Information Technology Forum (NITF) is a South African program that is committed, among other things, to ensure that the potential of the global information society is used to promote universal access to information for all peoples. The NITF has a Relevent Resources page that contains links to programs that deal with issues such as Africa and the information society, gender and computing, etc.
